When a player hits a target or drops a ball into a scoring chute on Slam A Winner, the machine is expected to add points to the score display and payout physical tickets accordingly. However, a frequent issue encountered in field operations is when the ball successfully enters the scoring target, but no score is registered and no tickets are dispensed.

Fault Breakdown & Diagnostic Summary
Reported Fault: Score is not recorded on the display, and no tickets are dispensed when target holes are hit.

Why Does the Needle Switch Cause This Failure?
In Slam A Winner, needle switches (whisker-actuated switches) act as the physical trigger inside the score chutes and target channels. They feature both Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) contact terminals.

Physical Bending/Misalignment: Because balls drop directly onto the thin metal arm/needle, high usage causes the needle to bend over time. As a result, a falling ball no longer pushes the arm far enough to actuate the switch mechanism.
Contact Surface Oxidation/Pitting: Constant electrical arcing and ambient moisture lead to oxidation on the internal contacts. Even if the needle is pushed physically, the electrical circuit fails to bridge, keeping the signal floating.
Internal Spring Fatigue: The return spring inside the microswitch loses elasticity or breaks, leaving the contact stuck in between states.
Since the central control CPU never receives the pulse input from the COM $\rightarrow$ NO contact closure, it assumes no target was hit. Consequently, no points are added to the display, and no payout signal is triggered for the ticket dispenser.
Diagnostic & Repair Process
Step 1: Physical Inspection of the Needle Switch
Power down the machine and open the target scoring assembly panel.
Inspect the thin wire needle/lever of each scoring switch.
Verify that the needle sits directly in the path of the ball and moves freely without binding against the chute walls.
Manually drop a ball down the channel and observe if the needle depresses with a distinct, sharp "click."
Step 2: Electrical Testing with a Multimeter
Disconnect the wiring leads from the target switch's COM and NO terminals.
Set your multimeter to Continuity Test Mode or Resistance ($\Omega$) Mode.
Place one probe on the COM terminal and the other on the NO terminal.
Resting State: The meter should read Open Loop ($1$ or $\infty\ \Omega$) with no beep.
Manually Depress the Needle: Press the whisker arm fully.
Good Switch: Reads near $0\ \Omega$ with a continuous beep.
Faulty Switch: Reads high resistance ($>5\ \Omega$), fluctuating values, or no continuity beep at all.
Step 3: Repair & Replacement Steps
Adjust the Arm (If Misaligned): If the electrical continuity test passes when pressed manually, gently bend the wire needle to ensure the falling ball applies sufficient leverage.
Replace the Switch (If Contacts are Degraded):
Unbolt the faulty needle switch from its mounting bracket.
Install a new arcade-grade microswitch equipped with a whisker/needle lever.
Re-solder or attach the harness terminals correctly: signal wire to NO (Normally Open) and ground wire to COM (Common).
Test Game Play: Power on the unit, drop test balls into every scoring chute, and verify that the display increments score instantly and triggers ticket payout.
