Location: Mounted directly onto the bracket housing behind the main drive pulley / motor shaft.
Mechanism: Reads a slotted timing disc mounted directly on the central axle to send both continuous pulse counts and a single home reference pulse back to the main CPU.
Why Sensor Failure Causes Stuttering & Wrong Scores
The CPU determines which score segment the wheel lands on by counting stepper motor micro-steps relative to a known starting point.
Clean Signal (Normal): Every time the wheel completes a turn, the actuator tab breaks the IR beam on the Home Sensor. This sends a single $+5\text{V DC} \rightarrow 0\text{V DC}$ reset pulse to the CPU, resetting the step counter to absolute zero.
Dirty / Damaged Sensor (Fault): If dust, oil, or paper fibers block the IR emitter, or if the sensor chip fails, the CPU misses the reset pulse. The game engine realizes the step count does not match the expected index, causing the motor driver to jerk or stutter as it attempts to hunt for the missing home signal. As a result, the game registers the wrong target segment when the ball or pointer stops.
